Film Photography!! I've known for awhile, that film was where I'd want to take my company, so Steven and I laid out a business road map, which had me transitioning to film at the beginning of Winter 2016. As some of y'all know though, I'm not exactly the 'calculated-decision' type of gal... so it may not come as a surprise that when I saw this film photography workshop, hosted by the brilliant Amanda Watson, I jumped on it!
The first evening, we had a welcome dinner at Ouisie's Table, complete with: a rehearsal dinner styled shoot modeled by Elly from Uptown With Elly Brown and her husband; styling by the talented Christina Leigh Events; amazing food; great conversation; and guest speaker, Katie O. Selvidge - founder of Cottage Hill.
In her speech, Katie mentioned two things that really resonated with me: (not direct quotes)
1. Sometimes we let the grind of every day life get in the way of the things that we're truly passionate about. We let prior life decisions dictate current decisions (rather than simply influence). It takes faith and courage to follow your passion and jump into a completely new industry. I would have never guessed four years ago that this is where I would be today. But I am so glad I made the jump... this is 100% where my heart is, and where I belong.
2. There is so much ugly hate and violence in the world (I would say these days... but according to my history classes, violence and hate have been around for a while). Sometimes as creatives we might read the paper, or see the news, and wonder if what we do actually matters. She shared a lovely story from when she was a ballerina, about an older gentleman at one of her shows who had very recently lost his wife. That particular play was his and his wife's favorite, and they would attend it annually. After the show, as he was leaving, he thanked Katie and her friend for helping him smile again. What we do does matter... we have the responsibility to tip the scales toward the side of beauty, grace, and light.
