As I alluded to in an Instagram post (for those of you that follow along on there), this couple really gave me the chance to reflect on Steven's and my history, and the circumstances that developed a strong foundation for our marriage.
Sarah and Chris have known each other since college where they met on the Cross Country team. Now, Chris works on the Gulf Coast, and Sarah's work has her in California. Their wedding is planned for this December, but for now, they rely on sporadic, short visits for time together.
When Steven and I first started dating, I was living in Virginia, and he was working abroad. Four months after he returned to the US, my work took me to Europe for three years.... as if it was somehow planned, five months after I returned, he was sent abroad again for seven months. Once he returned, we still were forced to live 700 miles apart from each other.
So, how could that possibly benefit our relationship? I believe the amount of time spent apart forced us to focus on communication, bolstered our mutual trust, and insisted that we prioritize one another. Communication seemed to be the one critical area that we got relatively right. It was difficult for us to brush a disagreement 'under the rug' when all we had was time away from each other to let the issue fester. We decided relatively quickly that we had to talk through our problems before we got off the phone. No relationship is perfect, and I can't say we followed that rule 100% of the time, but as a general rule, it did well for us over the spans of time that we were apart. Now that we live together, we do our best to keep the communication going.
While being away from your loved one for so long is never easy, it certainly creates a strong foundation on which to build a marriage. :)
