I'm starting to get it.
I received a message from a prior client, Susan, inquiring about a senior photography session for her daughter, with a family session immediately following. Seaside FL has been their family vacation spot since their kids were babies, so she felt strongly about having the senior session here, despite having to travel from the South West.
The days before our scheduled session, I spoke with Susan as she traversed the resort, scouting out the perfect locations for her daughter's senior shoot. They have been coming here annually, and she knows the area better than I do (even though, that area is where I predominantly photograph)... but she still put in the work to explore uncharted areas in search of the perfect locations for Caroline's shoot. In that conversation I suggested a sunhat... and she made sure to acquired one in time. For the shoot, Susan chauffeured us around the resort, stopping at all of the gorgeous spots she had so loving mapped out the days before.
As a photographer, I appreciated the leg work that went into preparing for our session, and I certainly think it enhanced the resulting images. As a mother, I took note.
I was blessed with a loving family, and a very dedicated mother. When I was younger, and I didn't appreciate the tough love (like not being able to set my own curfew at 15), my mom would tell me how Grandma would say to her, "when you get older, and have children of your own, you'll understand"... and she assured me Grandma was right. Just like Susan, my mom would (still does) do everything she can to make the world just right for me. It took me a while to understand that love....
... which brings me back to my opening statement. Now I have two crazy, adorable, sometimes sweet/sometimes sour "babies" (Kevin keeps insisting he is not a baby). The past four years have flown by, and I'm beginning to realize these are the moments in life I'll wish I can recall in detail. I can't imagine (nor do I want to) the moment when I'll need to scout out locations for their senior photography shoot. I just hope that when that moment comes, I'll be able to look back in my notes and follow Susan's lead.
